What Kind of Franchise Owner Are You?
Most people start their franchise search by looking at brands. That's backwards. Start with yourself. The right franchise depends entirely on who you are, how you work, and what you actually want your life to look like.
Three ownership models: which one fits?
Owner-operator: You're in the business every day. You manage the staff, serve the customers, run the operation. Best for people who want full engagement and maximum profitability per unit.
Semi-absentee: You hire a manager to run day-to-day operations. You check in regularly and handle strategic decisions, potentially while keeping your current job. Best for people who want business ownership without full-time involvement.
Investor / multi-unit: You're building a portfolio of locations from the start, with GMs running each unit. Best for people with significant capital and an operational partner or strong management background.
Four questions to answer honestly
- How many hours per week do you actually want to spend on this business?
- Do you enjoy managing people, or does that drain you?
- Are you comfortable with income variability in the early years?
- Do you want one great business, or do you want to build something bigger over time?
"I've talked to a lot of people who bought the wrong type of franchise for who they are. Know yourself first. The brand decision is much easier after that."
